International
Zodiac Grill
This exquisite Continental restaurant is located in the gorgeous Taj Mahal Hotel. The subdued lighting, beautiful chandeliers and waiters wearing white gloves give the restaurant a luxurious touch. Entrees include meat and seafood, such as steak, Cajun lobster and grilled lobster. A jacket and tie are essential for men. Reservations are required.
Nosh
Located in the Regal Cinema building, in Colaba, is this wonderful vegetarian restaurant. Dishes such as: Peshwari pulao, bourek (cheese fritters), risottos and Italian pastas are served here. The interior is decorated with grey marble tables, plants and white upholstered chairs, therefore giving the restaurant a clean and modern look.
Cafe Churchill
This convenient café opens early in the morning and stays open till quite late. Take-out is also an option for any item on the menu. Fresh, delicious pasta, pizza and other Continental dishes are served here. One can expect excellent desserts here as well. An added advantage is that it’s close to some of Colaba’s most popular budget hotels. No credit cards are allowed.
Chinese
The Great Wall
This authentic Chinese restaurant is located in The Leela Hotel, and its head chef is from Singapore. Three types of Chinese food are served here – Cantonese, Hunan and Szechwan. Reservations are essential, as this is an extremely popular venue.
Leopold Café
Known as a favourite tourist spot and built in 1871, this café is a great place to people watch. It is located in the Colaba Causeway. The tables are well spaced, the furnishings simple, and the paintings and posters have a French flair. The selection of tandoori and Chinese food is quite broad and the portions are large. The menu is so extensive that it has 333 entries!
Royal China
Known as one of South Mumbai’s newest and most popular Chinese restaurants, this restaurant has a menu that is nearly 15 pages long. It is located in Sterling. The food is excellent at this elegant restaurant. Tall wooden screens of Chinese letters divide the main dining area into separate sections, and a few well-chosen Chinese art pieces decorate the room. Reservations are essential.
Ling’s Pavilion
This restaurant is located behind Regal Cinema in Mahakavi Bhushan Marg. It is where many film stars go to enjoy excellent Chinese food, and it is one of the city’s most reputable Chinese restaurants. Once you enter through the moon-shaped door, you find yourself on a bridge overlooking a stream, complete with a variety of fish. Some of the tables are on balconies as well. A testimony to Ling’s popularity and authenticity is the number of Chinese tourists and diplomats that frequent the restaurant.
Italian
Stax
This restaurant is located in the Hyatt Regency Hotel, which is very near to the international airport. Focusing on food from the coastal provinces of Italy, it has a great variety of seafood entrees. Chef Giovanni Parrella serves wonderful antipasti, soup and pastas. The portions are large. The décor is fairly modern and pleasant. Tables are placed far enough from one another, so that even when the restaurant is packed, you can enjoy a private conversation and dinner. Both the service and wine selection are outstanding. This is definitely a great place to visit before catching a flight
Trattoria
One of Mumbai’s first Italian restaurants, it is known for its crispy, light pizza. The inside is decorated in bright colours, comfy leather sofas and chairs, and warm lighting. Stretched across one of the walls is a large mural of an ancient Roman scene. Also, the open-concept kitchen gives the place a casual feel. The pastas are delicious and the desserts are tempting. This restaurant is located in the Taj President Hotel.
Bellissima
Located near Chowpatty beach, this fashionable dining locale was once a seedy automobile showroom. Downstairs is a cool ranch-style pub and eatery that is quite popular with teenagers craving pastas and pizzas. Upstairs is the classy bar, the Liquid Lounge, and the fine-dining restaurant Bellissima. Reservations are essential.
Khyber
Named for the Himalayan mountain pass between Afghanistan and northwestern India is one of Mumbai’s best restaurants. Its classic Mughlai cuisine and tender kebabs remain outstanding. All three floors are done in a Northwest Frontier style – white marble floors, terra-cotta urns, carved stone pillars, low wooden rafters and gorgeous murals by local artists. The opulent décor provides a royal dining experience. On display are paintings by famous artists such as: M.F. Hussain and Anjolie Ela Menon. The seating is intimate and maximizes privacy (perfect for a romantic dinner). Reservations are essential.
Mughlai, Punjabi & Tandoori
Peshawari
This restaurant is located in the Grand Maratha Sheraton Hotel. The interior is decorated with beaded curtains and a giant glass window with a view of the kitchen. The kebabs are fabulous as is the black dal. Entrees are expensive, but the portions are large. Eat sparingly as you’ll be stuffed after one course
Woodlands Garden Café
This very popular vegetarian restaurant always has long line-ups and that is a testimony to the quality of food. If you want authentic South Indian food in a simple yet comfortable environment, then this is the perfect place. Excellent dosas and South Indian thalis are delicious and reasonably priced. It is located right next to the Kala Niketan sari shop in Juhu.
Woodside Inn
It is located on Wodehouse Road, near the Regal Cinema in Colaba. This restaurant is known for its authentic dosas, as they are extremely fresh and tasty. The dosas are served with traditional spicy chutney, so you may want to accompany your meal with a sweet or salty lassi or Indian beer. The prices here are also very reasonable.
Pan Asian
It is listed as one of the 60 best restaurants in the world by Conde Nast Traveler, and restaurateur-chef Rahul Akerkar has created a menu that tops every food critic’s A-list! Indigo has a chic, laidback ambience that is popular with both the locals and foreigners. This small restaurant is located in a beautiful, candle-lit old mansion on a side street in Colaba. Indian-Western fusion cuisine is served in simple, elegant surroundings. All the pastas here are commendable, but make sure to save room for the delectable desserts. Reservations are essential.
North Indian
Chetana
Located in the Fort region, this Rajasthani restaurant is decorated with hand-blocked fabrics on the ceiling and traditional toranas (ornamental carvings above temple entrances) on the walls. Tasty Rajasthani and Gujurathi vegetarian thalis (plates) are served here. Chetana also does a low-calorie Gujurathi thali. The service here is excellent. Please note that the restaurant is closed between 3pm and 7pm.
Samovar
This long, narrow restaurant located inside Jehangir Art Gallery is another South Mumbai venue that has retained its charm and low prices in spite of its popularity. With quick and efficient service, this is a perfect stopover after a day of roaming the Prince of Wales Museum and other local landmarks. This is as close to home cooking you are likely to get on a short visit to Mumbai.

Seafood
All Stir Fry
Located in the Gordon House Hotel on Battery Street, this popular new Asian restaurant is modern, with its black and white benches and tables facing food stations. At one island you choose the raw materials for an all-you-can eat meal (greens, cut veggies, fish, chicken, prawns, beef), and then at the second station, a chef cooks it for you with the sauce of your choice. Vegetarians take note: the restaurant offers meat-free soups and chefs use separate pans and utensils to prepare vegetarian dishes. You can also order from the a la carte menu.
Indigo
Owner Ravi Anchan has not only made Trishna a seafood legend in Mumbai, but it is considered one of the best in the world! This small restaurant is located near M.G. Road. Fresh seafood, Indian and Chinese foods are all served here. Favourites include: butter pepper garlic king crab and squid or oyster chili. Call in advance to inquire about the daily catch. Reservations are very essential.
